2009 Off-Season Training
As a top class racing driver, Michael is committed to staying ultra fit.

During the off season, Michael has been participating in the Bay Ocean Racing Series. This normally involves a series of 1km or 2km swims in the ocean on every 2nd or 3rd Sunday. As well as the swim series, Michael has also participated in the triathlon racing series. This starts with a 1km ocean swim followed by a 20km cycle ride and a 5km run. Over the past two months, Michael has participated in two triathlon events and an additional 4 swim only events.

Being as competitive as Michael is, he always strives to better his previous time and to pass as many competitors as possible. The last two ocean swims saw Michael finishing the 1km in just under 20 minutes and finishing in approximately 40th position out of over 100 professional and dedicated swimmers.

The series is held in a competitive but relaxed atmosphere, with the likes of ‘Iron Man’ champion Raynard Tissink, as well as swimming coach Mark Edge and Stanford Slabbert all taking part in the series.

Michael says that besides keeping him fit, it helps to keep his concentration levels up for extended periods.

As well as the swimming and triathlon events, Michael spends 4-5 days a week in the gym focusing on cardio to keep fit. Exercises such as, rowing, running orbital machine, spinning, swimming and the super circuit are areas that Michael enjoys most.
