2008 was a year of triumph and heartbreak
for Michael Stephen. He clinched the 125 Super National Rok Karting
Championship, but narrowly missed out on the class A Bridgestone
Production Car title. He is more determined than ever and with the
season starting on his home turf, Michael will be looking to set a
winning tone at Aldo Scribante (Port Elizabeth) on 7 March 2009.
Michael
will be focusing on taking his Audi A4 to victory and will not be
competing in Formula Volkswagen this year. His job will be made
slightly more difficult given that the production car events will begin
from rolling starts, eliminating the advantage of Audi’s brilliant
starting capabilities.
Despite this, the tight and twisty nature
of the circuit will favour the Audi’s four-wheel drive system in both
handling and tyre degradation. In the end, it is going to come down to
reliability and flawless driving.
Ensuring that he is on top of
his game, Michael has spent his off-season participating in the Bay
Ocean Racing Series and various triathlons. Swimming, cycling and
running has kept Michael fit and he will be hoping to use his fitness
and stamina to out drive his competition.
“To be on top of your
game, you have to be mentally and physically fit to remain 100% focused
at all times,” commented Michael. He had the following to say about the
year ahead. “I am looking forward to the 2009 season. I think the
racing is going to be close and the championship is going to come down
to consistent point finishes.”
Michael looks forward to meeting his fans in Port Elizabeth on 7 March.
