The next round of the Bridgestone
Production Car Championship will take place at Phakisa on 5 September
2009 and Michael Stephen has a tough challenge ahead of him in the
closely contested Class A championship.
With only three rounds
left in the championship, every point counts and Michael will be
looking to score maximum points to close the gap to the championship
leaders.
Michael currently lies fifth in the championship, only
14 points behind championship leader Anthony Taylor (BMW 330i) and four
points behind fourth placed Melvill Priest (Audi). With a perfect set
of results, any competitor is able to amass a whopping 25 points haul,
a clear indication of how close the championship really is.
The
layout of Phakisa Freeway tends to favour the rear-wheel drive cars,
especially the 350Z Nissans, which relish the long straights and fast
sweeps. It will be a tough challenge but with the consistency and speed
of the Audi, a race win is definitely on the cards.
2008 saw
Michael battle to 4th place in the first race while accident damage in
race 2, while lying 3rd, put an end to his race. Michael will be hoping
to make amends by bringing home a race win in 2009.
The
immediate competition in Michael’s championship quest are Anthony
Taylor, Johan Fourie and Leeroy Poulter. However, with Michael’s recent
form of two 2nd overall positions and a 1st overall in the last 3
rounds of the championship, Michael is sure that he can close the gap
to the championship leaders at Phakisa.
Between races, Michael
has built himself a 125cc gearbox kart, which he runs at every possible
opportunity in order to build up his fitness and sharpen his reflexes.
Together with a busy gym regime, Michael is confident that this
additional practice will have him in tip-top shape for the Phakisa race.
Michael
will have posters available for any race fans that would like to pop in
and have a chat with him at the Engen Xtreme pits at Phakisa on 5
September 2009.
